GOLD STAR CAFE & BAR

“ I wanted a small, intimate European-style bar and cafe, that opened Lunch to Midnight. Peter and Robyn’s lush red and gold colour theme worked for me. Their creative lighting that transitions from day to night, achieved exactly the atmosphere I wanted”.
Bob Robinson, Owner Gold Star Cafe + Bar Chicago
The building, on the right side of town, had a nondescript retail store, with a side entry down to the basement. In past lives it had been a seedy bar, a chinese noodle bar- long before they were the “in thing”, a photo lab - then empty for 3 years.
We received an excited phone call from Bob saying: ‘I’ve found this great space - in a basement - no windows, but it has toilets and an exhaust. Come and have a look and tell me I’m not crazy’.
So began an interesting 12 weeks. It was totally stripped out, save for the solid brick walls around the toilets and the kitchen area. It was an intimate (read small) space, that sat 24 in the cafe, and 16 around the 4 high tables in the bar. Lunch was always busy and the bar would be standing room only, most nights.
Bold hues and metallic finishes and interchangeable mood lighting contributed to the outstanding success of this funky venue.
