“We were excited by your concept for a new De Tomaso Sports Coupe. It was so much more than the team expected. With the unexpected passing of De Tomaso, the project has been retired for the present”.

Concept Design for De Tomaso

When Maserati competed in the 24 Hour Endurance Race at Bathurst, Giordano Casarini was the Chief Engineer for Maserati, at that time. He was sent to Sydney to oversee the preparation of the Shamal for the race.

Peter Rektor was introduced to Giordano by Tony Graziani who was then, the Maserati importer. In conversations around the De Tomaso brand, Peter said they should be producing a sports coupe. Knowing Peter’s Industrial Design background, Giordano took this further with De Tomaso and Peter was invited to prepare concepts.

After three trips to Italy to develop, the engineering, the concept to a clay model and then the proto-type, the project was deferred following debilitating strokes, that severely impacted De Tomaso’s health.

Featured below are the initial concept renderings for the DTX Convertible and the Coupe and a photo of the Coupe proto-type.
